Of all of the funny money created from thin air by the Fed, a good percentage has been jammed into the market through the President's Working Group On Financial Markets (AKA Plunge Protection Team). This helps to explain the magnitude of the recent move in stock prices beyond what would otherwise have occured (dead cat bounce) by virtue of the debasement of the US Dollar (see charts).
The government is using your "money" (actually just debt, created from thin air) to artificially inflate the apparent value of stocks (paper). The only way to keep it moving higher from here is to do more of the same - intervening in the markets through program trading and debasing the dollar - while in reality, foreign investment is in decline - or mass exodus. The government is using your money to underwrite the big casino and create the appearance of a "market," where none exists. To repeat, there is no "market." If there were, and it were functioning as an actual market should, no intervention would be required.
When you have nothing left to lose, this is what the end-game looks like. They are hoping to create a floor under real estate by debasing the dollar until the apparent value of things (relative to paper) causes a shift in sentiment globally (deflating the markets while inflating the apparent value of real estate). While foreign money helped to fuel the last blowoff-top in real estate (thanks to the weakend dollar), are foreigners are going to rush to tie up their assets in illiquid liabilities (taxable real estate) here again?
If, as it appears, China opts not to honor its derivative obligations, it's gameoverville...as contractual obligations of all sorts are busted. Whereas the Enron accounting fraud was too complex to comprehend - the derivatives contracts are intentionally about 10,000X more impossible to fathom, let alone unwind. All that risk, "securitized" and apparently offloaded into outer space, suddenly crashing back to earth like a metorite (on the backs of pensioners - the intended bagholders). Picture a game of musical chairs, with no chairs. Now you can clearly see why Bush was so hell bent on "Privatizing Social Security." The banksters were trying to invent a means for citizens to appear to lose their own retirement "money," - which in reality, does not exist.
If, as it appears, China flips the US the bird on their contractual obligations, the apparent value of all things paper will collapse, while the rush into gold and silver will be staggering.
You've heard the term "full faith and credit of the United States" as the sole reason why people accept greenbacks as an apparent store of value. Viewing the US from the perspective of other countries, ho plunger | 09.05.09 - 8:29 am | #

These charts tell the story.
